Heneral luna (lit. General Luna) is a 2015 filipino authentic biopic film portraying all Antonio Luna’s administration of the philippine revolutionary guard throughout the Philippine–American War. It opens for those starting of hostilities for those american colonizers. Also finishes with those death about luna on june 5, 1899 – a  time in which luna served as Supreme Chief of the Army under the First Philippine Republic. It directed and produced by Jerrold Tarog toward Artikulo Uno Productions. The film accepted basic approval starting with critics and gatherings of people alike, praising its cinematography, writing, acting also the plot. The novel into a film might have been chosen as the Philippine entry for the Best Foreign Language Film t the 88th Academy Awards, but it was not nominated. The movie satisfied the functions of art for it can make a recognition to Antonio luna because the movie indicated its viewers about as much patriotism and gallantry. It accentuated the history from claiming our nation under the locale of afterward of President Emilio Aguinaldo do as General Luna lead the Philippine army for the freedom of our country. It also indicates the political progression during his reign. As much as viewing the film, it stretches our learning about our history and at the same time, it is also enthralling.

Philippines have been colonized by different countries such as America, Japan and Spain. Many Filipino heroes defended and fought for our freedom has a lot of heroes to be called to sacrifices even their lives just to get the freedom that we enjoy in our daily lives today. We are Filipino that do not fight for our freedom in our own country not because we do not want to fight but because we are less of courage and brevity to fight for our own freedom that we really have to got in that time. I am just still hoping that now we do not waste the sacrificing of lives of our Filipino hero and one of our hero is the valiant heneral Antonio Luna. In the movie, President Emilio Aguinaldo (Mon Confiado) together with as much leader Apolinario Mabini (Epi Quizon) and the entirety presidential bureau would debating the issue of the American vicinity in the Philippines. Felipe Buencamino (Nonie Buencamino) and Pedro Paterno (Leo Martinez) help an exchange for Americans. At the same time, Antonio luna (John Arcilla) also José Alejandrino (Alvin Anson) need to pay war with pick up autonomy to the country. Luna asks those bureau with commission a pre-emptive strike of  the Americans have yet to land their ground troops. However, Aguinaldo guaranteed as much bureau that those Americans required guaranteed on help win flexibility starting with their spanish overlords. Unfortunately, those Americans bring attacked key urban areas for Manila, demonstrating a workable war against the Filipinos.

General José Alejandrino,Colonel Francisco “Paco” Román (Joem Bascon), Commander Eduardo Rusca (Archie Alemania), Commander José Bernal (Alex Medina) and (Art Acuña) – leave on an burdensome crusade against the attacking american constrains. Throughout a powerful clash against american troops headed by Luna, asks to reinforcements from the Kawit unit. However, commander Pedro Janolino (Ketchup Eusebio), declines to go along a direct result the request that he did not turned from President Aguinaldo himself. Luna angrily rides to Janolino’s camp, humiliates him in front as much men that dismisses the unit to meager. Luna at that point, assembles a armed force of 4,000 troopers by declaring as much notorious “Article One”, expressing that every last bit who deny to take after as much requests should be executed without the profit of a trial of a military court. He additionally enlisted people lieutenant García (Ronnie Lazaro) then afterward seeing as much marksmanship skills. Furthermore it makes him administrator about as much world class unit for sharpshooters.

Concerning illustration of the war drags on, Buencamino and Paterno show their backing of a proposition towards the Americans to Philippine self-governance. Irritated by this, Antonio Luna requests their capture. Luna’s crusade may be undermined by Tomás Mascardo (Lorenz Martinez), who opposes Luna’s request for reinforcements. It expressing that he will just take after the President’s regulate requests. At the same time, those two generals need aid regarding conflict clinched alongside Pampanga. The Americans development relentlessly as different filipino generals such as Gregorio del Pilar (Paulo Avelino) retreat to the north. Luna visits  Aguinaldo and Mabini with document as much resignation, knowing that Buencamino and Paterno needed been set free. Aguinaldo declines to acknowledge as much resignation, but it agrees on tell luna make a home office for the Philippine Army in the north.

After, Luna summoned towards the telegram of the President’s home office to Cabanatuan. In spite of the fact that as much officers are suspicious, Luna rides to Cabanatuan, bringing main Román Furthermore Rusca for him. The greater part of the fighters needed at that point exited home office under Aguinaldo’s orders, for the special case from claiming a few components of the Kawit unit. Luna uncovers upon landing that Aguinaldo needed officially cleared out and just Buencamino remains in the office. Likewise they return warmed words, an absolute shot may be let go outside. Luna investigates and encounters commander Janolino, who ambush him. Luna was shot and stabbbed. Furthermore hacked over on passing, Román will be also murdered same time a wounded Rusca surrenders of the Kawit officers. The greater part of Luna’s remaining reliable officers are arrested, same time some would killed, including the Bernal brothers. Likewise requested by Aguinaldo, Roman need aid covered for full military honors by those Kawit unit – those same men who murdered them. Mabini, who is around those mourners, notices a  bloodied bolo for a standout amongst the soldiers. However, the Kawit unit might a chance to be excused from that point.

The American daily papers rapidly Aguinaldo for those passing from claiming Luna, after those war an age-old Aguinaldo prevents as much inclusion on the assassination as hee recognizes Antonio luna. Likewise , as much as practically splendid, Luna considered as the greater part fit general. Macarthur also recognize Luna as a deserving adversary, snickering In those reality that those Filipinos murdered the best genuine all they required. Througout the mid-credits scene, all Gregorio del Pilar makes prepared on disguise Aguinaldo’s retreat to the north. He gathers Luna’s remaining men and requests as much associate will select 60 about them.

In terms of plot structure, the movie used ‘flashback’ as it done in a single shot without a help of computer graphics. When I watched the film, I was amazed by the flashback and I was more amazed that it was not used computer graphics as well. The flow of the movie is more on the main points of Heneral Luna’s Life that reflects the current Philippine society.

There are quotable lines that portray some of the situations today. For example,“Para kayong birheng naniniwala sa pag-ibig ng isang puta”, it deduces from this line that it is a reminder that shows for voters who easily believe poiliticians’ flowery promises during campaigns.  It also promotes cohesion to Filipinos because it is a call for us to stop the mistakes that are always repeated especially in the politics. Then, it educates us about ourselves and the world, and the main purpose of a movie is to entertain wherein the humor is still present.

“Mga kapatid mayroon tayong mas malaking kaaway kaysa mga Amerikano. Ang sarili natin.”

It reflects the undisciplined behavior of Filipinos especially on road signs. Also, it shows crab mentality, selfishness and lack of discipline of many Filipinos which are some of the reason why our country is still suffering until now in our own mistakes. Heneral Luna also emphasizes that Filipinos, are our own enemy, because we are slaves in our own country by the business minded foreigners. It is the most powerful message of the movie that we should remember each day. Filipinos fight with each other because Filipinos were led by anger and selfishness to do things that make themselves and their fellow Filipino their enemy. The film was very engaging because its story encourages all the Filipinos who are slaves to fight for their rights. It also encourages us to be brave like Heneral Luna. It also shows us that selfishness and anger will only lead us to failure or disappointment.

“Ganito ba talaga ang tadhana natin? Kalaban ang kalaban? Kalaban ang kakampi?”

War between Filipinos and Americans didn’t stop because of betrayals and quarrels between ally, which is Filipino to Filipino. In the movie politicians take both sides, side of Filipinos and side of Americans. They can’t stand with their own feet, they can’t make themselves loyal to our country, they can’t give their lives for our country unlike Heneral Luna. We saw in the movie that every time politicians and Heneral Luna has meetings they always argue, they always disagree with each other.

The “Function of art” being fulfilled by the film is the Spoliarium. It means war. . It was the commemoration of Heneral Antonio Luna’s death. He died for our country’s freedom. He died not because of war but because of us. The movie wants to give honor and to salute Heneral Luna for being brave, strong, and courageous enough to fight for our country. This is the scene where Heneral Luna died because one of his platoons who betrayed him, tortured him. When Heneral Luna died they pulled Heneral Luna towards the wall and it pictures the Spoliarium. There was an aesthetic experience through the whole movie specially when the Spolarium appeared. Another function of art is that it entertains the viewers.

I was amazed of how it was the film made. It was mixed aesthetic emotion that I have been experienced. I was amazed of how the characters give justice to their roles as John Arcilla, who played the role of Heneral Antonio Luna is very successful and it really fits him.  Each character portrays their role effectively and to make an impact to the movie. They did their best and that is the reason why the movie “Heneral Luna” received many awards and good feedbacks. It’s engaging because all the casts or characters were all very excellent. They greatly fulfilled their significant role in the movie.

joven

Joven Hernandez Jr. is a fictional character created in the movie. Joven is a Spanish word which means youth, so Joven Hernandez jr. represents the youth today. He is also the narrator of the movie. He is an good example of eye-opener to all of us. He let us see what was going on during the war, inside the government and the life of many Filipinos before. He wants us to know what is the truth and what should we fight for. He encourages us to be like Heneral Luna, who would do everything just to keep our country free from all invaders. He also wants us to love our country and fight in our best own way. He was shot in his ears and hands, and if we will observe, Heneral Luna is very protectice to Joven. It’s an implication that youth should be protected and the youth should learn to listen and take action to what is right. It’s an indication that the youth will continue the mission that was started by the ancestors. Thus, youth holds the hope of the future. Lastly, he wants us to give honor to all of the heroes of our country, Philippines.

It has also a great supporting cast – in which it has annoying performance of Mon Confiado as Aguinaldo, an unexpected sympathetic performance of Mabini by Epi Quizon, Archie Alemania’s great comedic timing that made his character Rusca all the more endearing, and Lorenz Martinez as proud Mascardo. These people not only acted well, they also looked like real people which this film gives an impact to the audience and the Filipinos as well.

The theme of film was politically art, because it carries social function of the life of filipinos during phlippine revolution. It is also an art of  friendship, love for the country, and unity, although the arguments and betrayals of Filipinos in the movie was very valuable. The cinematography was also great – shots and lighting used were very deliberate and enhanced the viewers’ experience of the story without distracting from the overall tone- unapologetic in honesty, while still showing vulnerability. It portrayed Luna as irreverent, but showed a great deal of respect for his passion to defend the country and its people.

On the script, it used catchy words that can easily understand so that’s why the film had many famous lines like “negosyo o kalayaan? bayan o sarili? Pumili ka!”. And also the other scrips are poetically-written. The script is clever and it flows. Scenes do not drag especially in the long exchange between Luna and Tomas Mascardo.

Overall, it was well paced, with an easy-to-follow narrative, but it never tried to dumb anything down for the audiences. It injected realistic amounts of humor, action, swearing, and heartbreaking sadness that war, and particularly this narrative, would bring – all without seeming indecisive in its tone.
